Using Videos to Train New Hires!



How to Train Your Hotel Team Fast


Ever get the new team member overwhelm?


The overwhelm and excitement of "YES, I found someone! But now how do I train them? I don’t have the time, energy or resources to get them up to speed!"

There was once a time that a MAJOR part of our training consisted of reading manuals and then waiting on others to show us new tasks.

This is a great way to develop that new hire who is eager to learn...if you are in the stone age.


I am so embarrassed that this is the way we were training!

It took people at least a year to get familiar with their responsibilities and any time an issue came up they had to go to someone on the executive team.

This was very frustrating for us because we didn’t always have the time to drop everything and assist.

Or even worse, it was faster for us to do it and so the new team member never received an explanation of what was happening.


As a leader of your hotel, you understand how important it is to capitalize on new team members!

They are eager, excited, and are a blank slate that you can develop your expectations into!

These newbies are open and willing to train!!


But the problem of you and your team not having the time is a real bottleneck.


What if there was another way?

What if there was a way in which you could train time and time again with the same consistency and result?

A way in which you didn’t have to be the bottleneck?


Let’s face it, it was typically the same questions being asked of you all the time.

So, let’s take those questions and make it easier for you to train anyone and everyone in the future.


To do this, we started recording videos of our responsibilities and how we handle specific situations!

Videos are so helpful because you can explain and show exactly how and what you want to be accomplished.

We have been using the software Loom to conduct these quick trainings, however there is other software out there.


The key to doing this is whenever a situation comes up, record yourself right then and there answering the following questions:

  1. What am I doing?

  2. Why am I doing it?

  3. How does this add value?


By creating the video at the same time, you complete the task and answer the question! Then you can send the video out to anyone who asks that question in the future.

So today’s simple tip is to begin recording training videos as questions come up so that you can train your team faster and clearer and remove the headache of answering the same questions over and over again!


These are very helpful for the trainee as well because they can just watch the video and receive a clear answer that they can then refer back to in the future!!!
